Voice of Gladness
Scored for SATB Choir, Mezzo Soloist, Two Tenor Soloists, Two Narrators, Orchestra. An excellent Easter Season concert work performable by amateur through semi-professional choirs. An uplifting and inspiring musical presentation about the mission of Jesus Christ.
The title, Voice of Gladness, is taken from Doctrine and Covenants 128:19 & 23, quoted here only in part. “Now, what do we hear in the gospel which we have received? A voice of gladness! A voice of mercy from heaven; and a voice of truth out of the earth; glad tidings for the dead; a voice of gladness for the living and the dead; glad tidings of great joy.”
There exist almost countless musical works that focus on the last several days of the life of our Savior, Jesus Christ. This period of suffering is often referred to as the Passion of Christ. Such musical works are most often and appropriately performed during Easter season.
Voice of Gladness distinguishes itself from other Easter Week presentations in that it begins with our experience at what is referred to as the pre-mortal council in heaven. At this council, our Heavenly Father presented the Great Plan of Happiness, also known by other names such as the Plan of Redemption, Plan of Salvation, etc., and thus our need for a Savior. The cantata proceeds through mortal life, choices we make, acknowledgment of our Savior's healing love, His suffering, death, and His miraculous resurrection. This presentation especially emphasizes the immense blessings of joy we can receive as we choose to follow Him, and thus may be appropriately performed at any time of the year.
Performance Notes
Optional video segments may be included which dramatically enhance the overall spiritual impact of the program. Additional technical assistance is needed for that feature. The list of recommended videos may be requested by contacting dean.hamill@hushmail.com. If the choir is fewer than fifty singers, a sound reinforcement system is recommended. It is likely that the soloists will need microphones. A QR Code is available at the website for the audience to see the lyrics online during the performance.
Composer's Note
It is my hope that those who experience this presentation will feel an increase of joy in their lives; the supernal joy that is provided by our Heavenly Father through His Plan of Redemption and His Most Beloved Son, Jesus Christ. To them be all glory, honor and eternal praise.
